CULTURE AT WORK Artist in Residence 2017 Lea Kannar-Lichtenberger

My residency will explore how our contemporary society, tourism and consumerism, is affecting isolated island communities around the world. Using material gathered from a research journey in January 2017 (as part of the Ninth Wave ‘Floating Lab’) travelling to Antarctica. I will be investigating how these relationships are impacting on the marine and wild life of the area and how this connects with the greater global issues surrounding the Anthropocene.

April to 26 May (residency dates) 2017

Exhibition dates May 27 to June 10 2017

In January this year I have been on a short (due to numerous storms) journey to Antarctica with the Ninth Wave (formally The Clipperton Project)

This has led me to propose a change to my original residency dealing with the Faroe Islands. I will still be pursuing the issues surround, tourism, plastics and ocean debris however the centre of my focus will be Antarctica.

During my time there I video recorded various melting glaciers on Deception Island and recorded sounds associated with the area. So I will use my time at Culture at Work to create new work based on this recent self-directed research journey that looked into the human impact on this remote Area.

The research undertaken in Antarctica still forms part of my ongoing investigations into how tourism and the Anthropocene is effecting world heritage and remote islands which have included to date The Faroe, The Galapagos and Lord Howe Islands as microcosms of our biosphere.

I also propose to contact and work with a sound artist in association with this project as well as others who are involved with research in Antarctica

With a combination of my collected research I will look to create an installation that will immerse the viewer allowing them to have a more visceral experience of how the human foot print (i.e. plastics etc.) is not just a remote issue but make it a personal individual issue.
